Xi'an Fan Club...
It seems that the Xi'an chapter of my fan club is alive and well! It consists of an entire family... Mom, dad, grandpa, and the kids. We were coming back from the Moslem Quarter its’ Mosque, and a labyrinth of stalls selling food, antiques, and souvenirs. A family stopped, and dad began to wave the kids closer and closer to us, trying to "sneak" a picture with the Caucasians. We noticed so we invited them to take a picture. When we did most of the family jumped right in... we of course took this picture of "the club." We have had a few explanations for these photo shoots. We are told by the English speaking guides we hire, and the people who work the concierge’s desk some variation of the following story. It always involves the "rural Chinese nationals," never the city dwellers. It appears that the people from rural China have never seen non-Asians. When they come to the city (any city) for holiday, they are amazed by our exotic looks, and just HAVE TO take a picture. It is best to use your child in the picture to prove you were really there, but hey, a solo shot will do too.We then continued on our walk back to the hotel. Jeff though the store was proclaiming that Maya
was sweating... and who would want to buy into that? A closer inspection of the window (ruffles on the groom, is that bride pregnant?) and we realized that a misplaced apostrophe was the culprit. Maya was not sweating, it was her...
