Everyone Loves A Parade
Our goal to day was to wander, just wander, through the Miliflories area of Lima. We often like the surprises brought to us by serendipity. Today was no disappointment. We just began to walk and noticed all the drapings of a parade. There were stanchions along the sides of the road, arches of red and white balloons across the streets (Peru’s flag is red and white), and white plastic chairs set in a circle around an intersection. We queried several people until we found someone who spoke English. Independence Day in Peru is 28 July each year, when they celebrate their separation from Spain. However, today was a pre-independence day parade organized each year by Wong a South American chain of supermarkets. It featured floats by local Lima businesses, school marching bands, severl dragons, and an array of other entertainment. We were told that this parade was an annual, but very nontraditional event... anything goes. Check out the short videos below, and enjoy!
